Virtualization vs Containers (Conceptual Intro)
Demystify cloud infrastructure: Type 1/2 Hypervisors vs Linux Namespaces, cgroups (Control Groups), chroot, Union File Systems (OverlayFS), and startup latencies.
01.1. Virtual Machines (Hardware-Level Virtualization)
A Virtual Machine (VM) virtualizes underlying physical hardware components (CPU, RAM, disk controllers, network adapters) using a Hypervisor (also known as a Virtual Machine Monitor / VMM):
- Type-1 (Bare-Metal) Hypervisors: Run directly on the physical server hardware without a host OS (e.g., AWS Nitro, VMware ESXi, KVM, Xen).
- Type-2 (Hosted) Hypervisors: Run as a software application on top of an existing host OS (e.g., VirtualBox, VMware Workstation).
The VM Architecture: Every virtual machine runs a complete, independent Guest Operating System (with its own kernel, memory manager, device drivers, and system daemons).
- Security Advantage: Hardware-level isolation enforced by CPU virtualization extensions (Intel VT-x / AMD-V). If a guest OS kernel is compromised, the attacker remains trapped inside the VM sandbox.
- Performance Cost: High memory overhead (gigabytes of RAM dedicated to duplicate guest OS kernels) and slow startup times (30 to 90 seconds to boot).

Hardware Virtual Machines (Hypervisor) vs Linux Containers (Shared Kernel) 📦
VMs duplicate entire Guest Operating Systems and virtualize hardware; Containers are isolated OS processes sharing the host Linux kernel via Namespaces and cgroups.
