The Anti-Corruption Layer (ACL) Pattern

💡
Core Architecture Summary

Isolate modern architectures from legacy systems: Domain translation, semantic adapters, facade layers, and preventing legacy domain leakage.

Key Glossary Concepts in this TopicAll Glossary Terms

01.1. The Hazard of Legacy Domain Contamination

When building modern greenfield microservices in large enterprises (banks, insurance carriers, airlines, healthcare), the new service must almost always communicate with an existing legacy system (e.g., a 30-year-old COBOL mainframe, a massive SAP ERP system, or an ancient SOAP/XML service).

How Legacy Systems Corrupt Modern Codebases:

If developers directly integrate the new service with the legacy API, the legacy system's quirks inevitably leak into the new codebase:

  • Obscure Naming & Cryptic Fields: Variables like CUST_REC_TYP_A, ACCT_STAT_04, and TXN_FLAG_X begin appearing throughout the new service's business logic.
  • Leaky Domain Models: The new service's data models inherit the flawed assumptions and technical limitations of a database schema designed in 1988.
  • Coupled Deprecation: When the legacy system is eventually decommissioned, rewriting the modern service becomes almost as difficult as rewriting the original monolith.

Eric Evans defined the Anti-Corruption Layer (ACL) in Domain-Driven Design to prevent this architectural rot.
