Feature Flags & Canary Deployments
Decouple code deployment from feature release: Feature flagging architectures (LaunchDarkly, Unleash), progressive canary traffic shifting (1% -> 10% -> 100%), Automated Canary Analysis (ACA), and dark launching.
01.1. Decoupling Deployment from Release
In modern continuous delivery, two concepts that were historically coupled are strictly separated:
- Deployment (Technical Action): Installing and running new code binaries on production infrastructure. At this stage, the code is dormant and completely invisible to end users.
- Release (Business Action): Making that functionality active, visible, and accessible to customers.
By decoupling deployment from release through Feature Flags (Feature Toggles) and Canary Deployments, teams eliminate the high-risk "big-bang deployment" model. Code can be deployed to production weeks in advance and released incrementally to controlled cohorts without redeploying software.
