Edge Caching & Points of Presence (PoPs)
Explore edge compute and caching topologies: Cache keys, cache purging (instant purge vs soft purge), tiered caching, and edge serverless workers (Cloudflare Workers).
01.1. What is a Point of Presence (PoP)?
A Point of Presence (PoP) is a physical data center facility located at strategic internet crossroads (Internet Exchange Points / IXPs) where major telecommunications carriers, ISPs, and content networks interconnect (peering).
Modern CDNs operate 300+ PoPs across 100+ countries. Each PoP contains:
- Edge Routing & Anycast Switching Fabric: Ingests raw multi-gigabit traffic directly from local ISPs.
- Edge Caching Storage Engines: Terabytes of ultra-fast PCIe NVMe SSDs and volatile DRAM storing hot cached responses.
- Edge Serverless Compute Nodes: Lightweight V8 JavaScript isolates (Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute@Edge, AWS Lambda@Edge) that execute business logic in <1ms without booting full containers.
