Service Discovery (Client-Side vs Server-Side)
Solve the dynamic ephemeral IP problem in microservices: Service Registries (Consul / etcd / Eureka), Client-Side vs Server-Side Discovery, and Kubernetes DNS.
01.1. The Dynamic Ephemeral IP Problem in Cloud Native Systems
In traditional monolithic architectures, servers had static, permanent IP addresses (192.168.1.50) configured in static configuration files.
In modern containerized cloud environments (Kubernetes, AWS ECS, Autoscaling Groups):
- Container pods are ephemeral: they are created, scaled up, destroyed, and rescheduled dynamically across different physical worker nodes continuously.
- Every new container receives a random, dynamic private IP address (
10.244.3.42). - If Service A hardcoded Service B's IP address, all API calls would fail the moment Service B restarted or autoscaled.
Service Discovery is the automated mechanism that allows services to register their network locations dynamically and discover the live, healthy network endpoints of other services in the cluster.

How dynamic microservices locate ephemeral container IP addresses: Client-side discovery queries the registry directly; Server-side discovery routes through a load balancer or Kubernetes kube-proxy.
